The Bowes Museum
The palatial Bowes Museum was built by a Mr.John Bowes and his wife the
Countess Montalbo in 1869 at a cost, it is asserted, of £100,000.
It is a French style chateau housing art collections of national importance and
is one of the most original, dramatic and enjoyable art museums in Britain.
