Portland Basin
The junction of the Ashton and Peak Forest Canals, close to Portland Basin Museum.
Cavendish Mill, in the background, is typical of the hundreds of red brick cotton mills
which once dominated the area.
Hartshead Pike
The tower on Hartshead Pike, dating from 1758, is a well-known local landmark. It overlooks
Ashton and is visible from many surrounding areas. It is a popular destination for afternoon strolls
and the tower once housed a refreshment shop.
The Market
Ashton has had a market for over 700 years. The victorian market hall
(on the right in the background) and the large open market are open
six days a week and draw shoppers from miles around.
